EP01: Why I went with Arch Linux

On today’s episode of Arch BTW Podcast

Why I chose to go Arch Linux full time on every machine I own.

  • Google Gatekeeping Open-Source in what appears to be double standards.
  • Farewell to ArcoLinux
  • Arch Linux receives huge list of update packages over the past 48 hours.

Nextcloud, a popular open-source, self-hosted cloud platform, is clashing with Google over restrictions that cripple its Android app’s functionality. Since September 2024, Google has blocked the Play Store version of Nextcloud from uploading non-media files (like PDFs and documents), citing “security” reasons—while exempting apps from Microsoft, Dropbox, and Google itself. Despite repeated appeals, Google hasn’t resolved the issue, forcing Nextcloud to display a notice warning users of the limitation.

Nextcloud’s Communications Director, Johannes Poortvliet, accuses Google of anti-competitive behavior and calls on the European Commission to act, noting similar past complaints against Microsoft went unanswered. With legal action impractical for a small company, Nextcloud advises affected users to switch to its F-Droid or GitHub versions for full functionality.

The situation highlights Google’s inconsistent policies and the challenges smaller tech firms face against industry giants.

ArcoLinux says farewell, As stated a month ago over on the ArcoLinux website, Erik says farewell as he looks back on the project with pride.

EP0: What’s this all about?

Welcome to Arch BTW Podcast.

A podcast about Linux, with an Arch BTW slant.

This show will deep dive into Arch Linux and of course, the wider world of Linux, and everything Open Source.

My Linux journey started back in the late ’90s with Red Hat 5.1. From there, I hopped through Fedora, CentOS, Debian, and Ubuntu, eventually settling on Ubuntu as my daily driver since 4.10 in 2004.

But like so many of us, I was stuck in a love-hate relationship with proprietary hardware—especially for my desktop. Every time I tried Linux as a Desktop, something fell short for Hardware support. For years, I dual-booted Linux Mint alongside Windows, I ran Ubuntu under WSL, and grudgingly tolerated Microsoft’s quirks. But with Microsoft doubling down on Windows 11 telemetry, ads, and lock-in, I finally snapped.

why ‘Arch BTW’? Well, if you’ve spent any time in Linux communities, you know that Arch users have a certain reputation for mentioning their distro at every opportunity. So yes, the name is a little tongue-in-cheek. But beyond the meme, Arch represents something bigger: a DIY ethos, transparency, and the power of choice—values that resonate across the entire open-source world.

This podcast will cover:

  • Arch Linux tips, tricks, and news
  • General Linux discussions (from beginner-friendly topics to advanced sysadmin deep dives)
  • Open-source philosophy, community, and projects worth supporting
  • Interviews with developers, contributors, and power users

Thanks for joining me on this journey. Now, let’s get ready to rm -rf the excuses and start exploring the world of Linux—the Arch way, BTW.
